Day 17: ‘Black Rain’ Falls Over Tehran as Iran War Hits American Wallets and Baghdad’s Green Zone
Oily, sooty residue coated the streets of Tehran after US-Israeli strikes on oil depots triggered a freak weather event β while American families are beginning to feel the war in their wallets.
π΄ BREAKING Β· Middle East War Day 17 Β· World Affairs Desk Β· March 17, 2026
It was supposed to be just another Monday in Tehran. Instead, residents woke up to something they had never seen before β black rain. Last week’s US-Israeli airstrikes on Iranian oil depots sent massive clouds of soot, carbon, and pollutants high into the atmosphere. When the rain finally came, it was dark and oily. People reported sore throats, burning eyes, and a greasy film covering their cars, balconies, and streets. Environmental experts warn the long-term health effects could be serious, and recovery will take years.

On the military front, the war rolled into its 17th day. Israel launched a fresh wave of strikes on Iranian infrastructure overnight. Trump grew frustrated with US allies β the EU declined to expand naval operations around the Strait of Hormuz. Dozens of tankers remain stranded on each side of the strait, unable to pass through Iran’s drone gauntlet. A drone also struck the Al-Rasheed Hotel in Baghdad’s Green Zone β home to the US Embassy β though no lives were lost.
“Gas is up. Diesel is up more. An Iowa corn farmer told NPR he has never felt so powerless about something happening so far away.”
Iran’s foreign minister said hundreds of civilians β including over 200 children β have been killed since the conflict began. Lebanon’s toll stands at 886 dead since March 2. House Speaker Mike Johnson moved closer to passing a large-scale Iran war funding bill through budget reconciliation.

π Oscars 2026 Β· Entertainment Β· 98th Academy Awards
Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre belonged to one man. Michael B. Jordan β the Newark kid who first broke hearts on The Wire, then punched his way to stardom through the Creed franchise β stood at the podium accepting the Best Actor Oscar for his extraordinary dual role as gangster twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s supernatural horror film Sinners. The entire room rose to its feet. It was his very first Oscar nomination. And he won.

“God is good. God is good,” an emotional Jordan told the crowd, pausing to name the giants before him β Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith. He joined one of Hollywood’s shortest shortlists: only the sixth Black man to win Best Actor in the Academy’s century-long history.
“To be amongst those giants, those greats, amongst my ancestors β thank you everybody for supporting me over my career. I feel it.”

Cuba Plunged Into Island-Wide Blackout β All 11 Million People Lose Power as Energy System Collapses

On Monday, Cuba’s entire electrical grid collapsed. Every light on the island went out simultaneously. All 11 million Cubans lost power after officials declared a “complete disconnection” of the national electrical system β a crisis years in the making, pushed over the edge when the US blockade cut off Venezuelan oil shipments that kept Cuba’s aging power plants running.

Protests erupted, with demonstrators burning a Communist Party office in the city of MorΓ³n. Cuban President DΓaz-Canel publicly confirmed his government is in active talks with the Trump administration β the first ever acknowledgment of such negotiations. Cuba announced plans to release 51 political prisoners and allow Cuban exiles abroad to invest in and own businesses on the island.
